High-Frequency PCB Materials

Material selection is one of the most important considerations in microwave and RF PCB performance. High-frequency designs commonly require materials with controlled dielectric properties, low signal loss, thermal stability, and consistent performance at elevated frequencies.

Standard has extensive experience processing advanced materials including PTFE, ceramic-loaded PTFE, TMM, polyimide, polyphenylene oxide, high-performance FR-4, and hybrid material constructions.

We routinely work with high-frequency laminate systems from leading manufacturers including Rogers®, Taconic®, and Arlon®.

Our experience is particularly valuable with hybrid RF PCB constructions, where high-frequency laminates may be combined with conventional PCB materials to achieve the required balance between RF performance, mechanical properties, manufacturability, and overall cost.


Specialized PTFE & RF Processing

PTFE and other microwave materials behave differently during manufacturing than traditional FR-4. Successful processing requires specialized equipment, processes, and experience.

The Standard Sherburne facility incorporates capabilities specifically suited for these materials.

  • Sodium Etch of PTFE Surfaces prepares PTFE materials to promote adhesion and reliable plated-through-hole performance.
  • Plasma Etching provides additional surface preparation and hole-wall conditioning for specialized high-frequency material systems.
  • Vacuum Lamination supports multilayer and mixed-material constructions where registration, material movement, and dielectric consistency are critical.
  • Precision Controlled-Impedance Etching provides tight control of conductor geometry, an essential requirement for maintaining impedance and repeatable high-frequency performance.
  • Precision CNC Drilling and Routing provides the dimensional accuracy required for complex RF and microwave designs.

Tight-Tolerance RF PCB Manufacturing

At microwave frequencies, small manufacturing variations can produce significant changes in electrical performance. Controlling the PCB manufacturing process is therefore an important part of achieving repeatable RF performance.

Standard's manufacturing capabilities include fine lines and spacing down to 2 mils, layer-to-layer registration to ±0.001", controlled line-width capabilities, plated-through-hole aspect ratios up to 10:1, precision copper plating, and advanced solder mask registration.

These capabilities allow us to manufacture complex high-frequency designs where conductor geometry and material consistency directly influence the performance of the finished circuit board.
